Eastern repousse pendant from dimensionally patterned mokume gane, double weave Roman chain
Sterling, copper, shibuichi, 22k gold, fine silver, Koroit opal; 2 x 1-1/2 x 3/8 in, 18 in chain
I created the pendant by combining the techniques of Eastern repoussé and mokume gane, which is a sheet comprised of layers of different metals. When I’ve completed all the free-hand hammering of the shapes (there’s no mold!) then I grind off the surface hammer marks to reveal the cross section off all those displaced layers. It’s really my interpretation of ancient Egypt meeting the Edo period in Japan. The natural patterning of the Koroit opal cut into a 3-sided pyramid and set in 22k gold reflects the significant cultural technologies of past eras. The chain is a 1-Directional Double Weave, an ancient pattern of Roman chain, which creates a square herringbone pattern.

$99.95 – $334.95Price range: $99.95 through $334.95
Learn the secret of texturally sculpting metal into any shape or design of high or low relief with the technique of Eastern repoussé and chasing, used by the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Scythian metalsmiths. Explore how to achieve exquisite detail, unsurpassed depth, and multiple levels of relief that are exclusive to this type of repousse, yet applicable to any type of design. End the confusion about where to hammer, with which tool, and how hard. Make several pieces suitable as pendants or brooches and discover the possibilities of using this process with alternative materials, such as mokume gane and bi-metal.. By working on a jewelry scale, you will develop a working knowledge of repousse and chasing that can be used on metalwork of any scale whether wearable, functional, or sculptural. Streaming sold separately. This DVD will not play on an iPad. To stream or download this content, please purchase the Vimeo edition, found here. Both editions come with the same ebook (that contains text and images not videos).
