My concept for this filigree pendant was to form an undulating textile-like structure that, though strong and unbending, would appear as ephemeral as the folds of fabric. 18k gold, 22k gold, Sterling silver, fine (pure) silver, Koroit opal 2.25 x 0.5 x 0.5 in

Experience the versatile elegance and lightness of Russian filigree that goes from evening wear to street wear. This pendant from the series, Avalon is completely handmade in sterling and fine (pure) silver from its delicately sculptured, tiny wires to its individually fused and woven chain links. Together they form a unique shape reminiscent of arabesques and Arabic calligraphy. Each pendant in the series is completely one-of-a-kind.

Delicate pure silver filigree fills the crescent phases, surrounding a naturally formed chrysocolla drusy, framed in 18K and 22K gold with a fall of naturally golden Biwa and baroque pearls. and suspended from a hand-fused loop-in-loop chain.

Naturally colored, freshwater and Biwa pearls symbolized the pebbles of a beach in this tapered necklace, continuously handwoven of pure silver.

Genuine freshwater and Biwa pearls symbolized the pebbles of a beach in this tapered necklace, continuously handwoven of pure silver.

Eastern repousse neckpiece of sterling silver with wax pigment, inspired by a bouquet of spring tulips
The leaves articulate to create a gentle curve around the neck. The center section was hammered from one single sheet and took over 120 hours of refined hand hammering to achieve the detail of the overlapping petals and leaves.
Permanent, pigmented wax in the recessed areas and finely chased lines adds a subtle hint of color. The result is durable and imminently wearable. Because of the tensile strength of the Eastern repousse technique, the necklace is surprising lightweight and comfortable.

Eastern repoussé and kum boo pendant on a Roman chain
sterling, 24k gold, Koroit opal

My concept for this filigree pendant was to form an undulating textile-like structure that, though strong and unbending, would appear as ephemeral as the folds of fabric. 18k rose gold, 22k yellow gold, fine (pure) silver, Koroit opal 2.25 x 0.5 x 0.5 in; Roman chain is chain 20″ long, handmade of fine silver and 18k rose gold links with 18k yellow gold clasp photo by Pat Vasquez-Cunningham

Each Eastern repousse segment was freehand forged individually, framed in planished round wire, and highlighted with 24k gold keum boo. Each rainbow hematite was set in a 22k gold bezel with sterling, scroll-worked wire to add space and light for contrast. The repousse shapes are inspired by ‘rumi’ designs in Islamic art. Like an ‘arabesque’ is an abstracted leaf, a ‘rumi’ is an abstracted bird or insect wing, and also the name of a 13th cent., Persian, mystic poet, Jalaluddin Rumi. As the necklace came together, my further abstracted and three-dimensional forms reminded me of chocolate confections, sprinkled in with gold and colored sugars – a tribute to a poet who wrote of light and love.

I have long had a fascination with religious architecture and the very human shapes that architects have chosen for the internal and external structures of buildings from every culture. Ever since people crawled through the belly of the earth to paint on cave walls, humans have implicitly venerated stone-formed symbols of the womb. These transformational symbols of form and space are imprinted on our psyches. The towers of Medieval Gothic, Islamic, and Indian architecture are obviously phallic, but the cloisters, naves, archways, and domes of these styles are undeniably feminine.
Much of my work is about this reflection of masculine and feminine form and space, which my Puritan-rooted culture pretends to ignore, even as people worship from within such buildings. The chased eyes on the front of the amulet symbolize the soul, as the stars, crescents, and curves on the back symbolize the cosmos. The outside shape was inspired by the temples of Khajuraho in India. The amulet serves as a gentle reminder that images and shapes repeat throughout art and time, but creativity lies in how one interprets them in one’s own work.

Eastern repousse pendant from dimensionally patterned mokume gane, double weave Roman chain
Sterling, copper, shibuichi, 22k gold, fine silver, Koroit opal; 2 x 1-1/2 x 3/8 in, 18 in chain
I created the pendant by combining the techniques of Eastern repoussé and mokume gane, which is a sheet comprised of layers of different metals. When I’ve completed all the free-hand hammering of the shapes (there’s no mold!) then I grind off the surface hammer marks to reveal the cross section off all those displaced layers. It’s really my interpretation of ancient Egypt meeting the Edo period in Japan. The natural patterning of the Koroit opal cut into a 3-sided pyramid and set in 22k gold reflects the significant cultural technologies of past eras. The chain is a 1-Directional Double Weave, an ancient pattern of Roman chain, which creates a square herringbone pattern.
