Eastern Repousse II: Rings & Cuff Bracelets

– Master the Repoussé Cuff.

At Long Last…

Chased and repoussé cuffs are the Holy Grail of repoussé work for jewelry. “I want to make cuff bracelets,” is the #1 reason people tell me they want to learn Eastern repousse. Ever since I released my DVD, Eastern Repousse & Chasing in 2009 with my very first Eastern repousse cuff bracelet on the cover, people from all over the world have been asking me to teach a dedicated course on this topic.

What might you might not know, though, is that my cuffs became iconic because, many years ago, teaching the fundamental technique of Eastern repousse led me to a creative breakthrough.

I’ve frequently been asked if it’s possible to repousse a strip of sheet in relief and then bend it into a cuff. No way! That’s like trying to repoussé a flat disc and then forging it into a bowl afterwards; you would lose all your detailed relief.

Other teachers have attempted to hang onto my coat-tails and promised they could teach chased or repousse cuffs bracelets, but what they really teach is either a small repoussé design in the center of a strip and then bend the plain, flat sides around or they hammer low, parallel channels in a flat strip that get squashed during bending and must be repaired.

Those are not structurally repoussé cuff bracelets.

Making beautiful repoussé cuffs requires simultaneously creating both the relief design and the cuff form itself, all while keeping the metal happy.

however…

Forming the entire structure via repoussé was a difficult concept for students to grasp, so early on in my teaching career, I pioneered and demonstrated the right way to do it and in different alloys like sterling, gold bi-metal, and mokume gane.

I even developed the method for creating rings in the same technique.

Now through the magic of online classes, I’m able to share my entire cuff bracelet process with you.

What Others Have to Say

The difference in Victoria’s online jewelry & metalsmithing courses

“Fantastic Teacher”

I learned repousse’ back in the 90’s, but haven’t done much since then. I took a Zoom class with Victoria and my love of this technique has been reignited! She is a fantastic teacher and her methods make it so much easier to achieve amazing dimension and detail than how I originally learned. It’s a really satisfying way to work metal and Victoria’s love of the technique really comes through in her teaching. She is very thorough and explains everything in a way that is very easy to understand.

“Victoria is a true artist and shares her gift teaching with patience, passion, good humor, and enthusiasm…”

I just spent the most wonderful class with one of the best teachers that I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Victoria is a true artist and shares her gift teaching with patience, passion, good humor, and enthusiasm…she has an infectious laugh, and you can’t help laughing with her while she encourages you to achieve levels of skill that you didn’t know you had.

“Fabulous Experience”

Victoria’s online Eastern Repoussé was a fabulous experience. Her approach to teaching is well organized and techniques are thoroughly explained both live and with pre-recorded close up videos. Victoria gave us thoughtful critiques as we progressed and I really enjoyed watching the show and tell presentations of everyone’s work. I’d highly recommend this class and hopefully I will get a chance to take another one with her.

In my 33+ years as a metalsmith, I’ve created a number of significant artworks and pioneered many techniques, but my Eastern repoussé cuff bracelets stand out among my most favorite and certainly the most acclaimed.
They are unique in both structure and design. They reach this sweet spot between that which is archetypal and imminently familiar and that which is utterly unique.
But my method for creating and teaching Eastern repousse rings and cuff bracelets is not limited to my own design preferences. Many styles and almost any aesthetic can work if you know how.

I’m really excited to be able to share step-by-step how I create Eastern repousse rings and cuff bracelets and to help you develop these skills in your own artistic voice.

“Achieve levels of skill that you didn’t know you had”

Victoria’s workshops are presented in a clear and engaging manner that is both highly informative and entertaining. As students, our skill-set was dramatically improved during the course of a workshop. We were able to put the techniques we learned to immediate use, and made the cost of the workshop back on the first piece we sold.

“In Japan, Victoria would be considered a national treasure…”

Victoria teaches techniques used for millennia to create many of the great works of art one can see in museums. She has found many tricks that streamline and improve the processes, and she uses them to make strikingly contemporary pieces rooted in the ancient world. Students are given a series of challenges and opportunities to grow their own inner voices and are encouraged to create works unique to them, at their levels of ability. The number of places one can learn these skills in the US can be counted conveniently on one’s thumbs. In Japan, Victoria would be considered a national treasure, and she would be funded to pass these skills on to the next generation.

“The Michael Bublé of teachers”

Victoria, you are the Michael Bublé of teachers. If you’ve never seen him perform, it’s a real treat because he is so connected to his audience. When he’s on stage it’s all about the audience, not about him. His ego is nowhere to be found, and you teach the same way. You love what you do, and it comes through in your teaching. Thank you for that!

Frequently Asked Questions

No! This is an intermediate Eastern repoussé class, but you must have studied Eastern repoussé with Victoria through her online classes, in-person classes, or through her video Metal Techniques of Bronze Age Masters: Eastern Repoussé & Chasing. This class will focus specifically on how to do technique on rings and cuffs, so a basic comfort level with the tools and steps of Eastern repoussé are a must.

Consider learning the process from Victoria’s online classes, her video Eastern Repoussé or her DVD on the same topic.

Unfortunately, no. A previous Eastern repoussé course with Victoria or learning from her videos is required even if you are very advanced in other chasing techniques. This course completely relies on a working knowledge of specifically Eastern repoussé as taught by Victoria.

You will need to purchase Victoria Eastern Repoussé & Chasing Tools here or from Rio Grande. in order to create rings and cuff bracelets in this technique. If you have made your own set of Eastern repousse tools from Victoria’s video, AND they are the same diameters, and lengths as her commercially available tools, they would work for this course.

A complete list of tools is available here.
