These earrings, along with a few other pieces from the same period, were inspired by Ella Fitzgerald’s version of the song, “Midnight Sun,” composed by Lionel Hampton and Sonny Burke in 1947 with lyrics later written by Johnny Mercer in 1954. I have a deep love of jazz songs written in a minor key and on a descending scale.

Heather began raising this vessel from a flat disc of copper sheet to the nearly full height you now see. She began sinking the disc over her tiny anvil to forge the cup shape and has progressed to bringing in the top portion by angle raising the vessel over a steel T-stake (just like non-winged humans do). Her left paw is becoming a little sore from the vibration, but with good technique and persistence, she hopes to move onto the planishing stage to remove the deeper hammer marks very soon.

On an uncharacteristically clear and dark night, I saw from my back yard a star I’d not previously noticed directly over my studio. I stared in disbelief because I was seeing what I should not have been able to see without a telescope: a glowing, elongated ellipse, a binary star system. After some investigation, I discovered it was Capella, the brightest star in the constellation of Auriga. It was more than a binary start. Capella is actually a quadruple star system made up of two binary pairs and was the brightest star in our sky 210,000 years ago. As I brought this ring with its glowing, elongated ellipse closer to completion, I thought of Capella’s light reaching my studio from nearly 43 light years away. While I would never be so arrogant as to believe the stars could possibly have any concerns at all about the day to day affairs of us humans, their wonder and beauty endlessly inspire my own creativity.

Eastern repousse neckpiece of sterling silver with wax pigment, inspired by a bouquet of spring tulips
The leaves articulate to create a gentle curve around the neck. The center section was hammered from one single sheet and took over 120 hours of refined hand hammering to achieve the detail of the overlapping petals and leaves.
Permanent, pigmented wax in the recessed areas and finely chased lines adds a subtle hint of color. The result is durable and imminently wearable. Because of the tensile strength of the Eastern repousse technique, the necklace is surprising lightweight and comfortable.

This is one of my few miniatures in which the subject is depicted at close to life size. Even my butterflies are smaller than their real counterparts. This tiny frog is part of a permanent exhibit of poisonous frogs that I visit on my frequent trips to ABG’s Fuqua Conservatory. His intensely vivid greens were a delightful challenge to create, as was the moss. The surrounding leaves, like in the rest of my miniatures, contrast the realism of the animal with the fanciful nature of the foliage. In this case, they are more realistically inspired by the aspidistra leaves surrounding my backyard fishpond with its own, much larger frogs. This juxtaposition of reality and imagination allows me to illuminate marvelous creatures in the most unexpected places!
