  • Peacock Splendor III by Victoria Lansford

    Peacock Splendor III (Original Miniature)

There is no other color so rich as the blue of a male peacock’s neck and throat. It is strangely difficult to replicate in pigments or dyes because it changes with the angle of light, making it elusive to capture in flat color. It is my most favorite color.

Available as an original 5″ x 7″ (11″x13″ framed) painting ($2200) or as a limited edition, numbered and signed, 5″x7″, archival print ($65). The original is painted and illuminated (gilded) in watercolor, ink, gouache, and 23k gold leaf on real animal vellum.

This is one of my few miniatures in which the subject is depicted at close to life size. Even my butterflies are smaller than their real counterparts. This tiny frog is part of a permanent exhibit of poisonous frogs that I visit on my frequent trips to ABG’s Fuqua Conservatory. His intensely vivid greens were a delightful challenge to create, as was the moss. The surrounding leaves, like in the rest of my miniatures, contrast the realism of the animal with the fanciful nature of the foliage. In this case, they are more realistically inspired by the aspidistra leaves surrounding my backyard fishpond with its own, much larger frogs. This juxtaposition of reality and imagination allows me to illuminate marvelous creatures in the most unexpected places!

  • Sold Out My Fierce Neighbors, miniature illumination of two male lions by Victoria Lansford

    My Fierce Neighbors

    $65.00

Medieval style miniature portrait of two male lions at Zoo Atlanta.

I’ve long been obsessed with the lions that live only a few blocks from my home and studio. Back in the early 2000’s, if the wind was just right, when the leaves were off the trees, I could hear one lion’s frequent roaring from my own backyard. It was a most extroverted lion! Sadly, he passed of old age, and the shifts in our urban canopy no longer let the sounds of the others carry this far.

These lions are based on a photograph my son Skyler took on our visit in the spring of 2018. From their vantage point of their stacked boulders, the majestic males alternate between ignoring their visitors and briefly, grudgingly acknowledging us with a kind of mildly irritated noblesse oblige.

Available as a limited edition, numbered and signed, archival print (5 x 5 in printed on slightly larger paper). The original is painted and illuminated (gilded) in watercolor, ink, gouache, and 24k gold leaf on real animal vellum.

  • Sold Out Harriet by Victoria Lansford, Medieval style miniature portrait of 'Harriet,' a Masai giraffe at San Diego Zoo

    Harriet

    $65.00

Available as a limited edition, numbered, archival print (4″ x 6″ printed on slightly larger paper at $65). The original is painted and illuminated (gilded) in watercolor, ink, gouache, and 24k gold leaf on real animal vellum.

The limited edition, numbered, archival (giclee) print has been painstakingly created to capture the brilliance of the colors and metallics as a print of superior longevity on cotton rag paper.

Harriet is a Medieval style miniature of a beautiful, Masai giraffe with whom I spent some time at Sand Diego Zoo a few years ago. She graciously posed for a number of photos on which I based the portrait. Getting her unique and characteristic spots correct was about as time consuming as all the filigree in the three pairs of earrings combined. Fortunately, I could work on her as I traveled and taught around the planet in 2017 and 201. As giraffes go, she was exceptionally portable.

  • Sold Out My Wild Neighbor the Meerkat

    My Wild Neighbor the Meerkat

    $65.00

This miniature painting is based on a photograph I took of a very serious meerkat on sentry duty at Zoo Atlanta. She was quite suspicious of the humans circling her home. For her portrait, I set her within a Medieval style, acanthus leaf, foliate frame, painted with watercolor and accented by 23k gold gilding and inked filigree on animal skin vellum. While one might not expect a Medieval meerkat, it was quite common during the Middle Ages and Renaissance for all types of animals, real or imagined, to appear woven within such page borders of hand illuminated manuscript books. I decided this precious and dignified, yet whimsical creature warranted her very own fairy tale setting.

This limited edition archival (giclee) print is hand-embellished, signed, and numbered.

4 x 6 inch print (same size as original) on 5 x 7 cotton rag paper
This giclee print has been painstakingly created to capture the transparency of the colors and the brilliance of the metallics as a print of superior longevity.
