Master Eastern Repoussé with Precision & Confidence

Eastern Repoussé and chasing is an ancient, time-honored technique that allows you to sculpt intricate designs directly into metal with unparalleled depth and precision. For thousands of years, artists have used this method to create stunning geometric patterns, lifelike animals, flowing foliage, and even regal pharaohs — all with a level of detail no other process can achieve.

Victoria Lansford’s 2025 Eastern Repoussé Extended Course isn’t just another class—it’s an in-depth learning experience designed to equip you with the exact skills, techniques, and insights to create dimensional metalwork in silver, copper, or gold.

What Other Artists Say about Victoria’s Eastern Repoussé & Chasing Course

Fantastic Teacher

I learned repousse’ back in the 90’s, but haven’t done much since then. I took a Zoom class with Victoria and my love of this technique has been reignited! She is a fantastic teacher and her methods make it so much easier to achieve amazing dimension and detail than how I originally learned.

Fabulous Experience

Victoria’s online Eastern Repoussé was a fabulous experience. Her approach to teaching is well organized and techniques are thoroughly explained both live and with pre-recorded close up videos. Victoria gave us thoughtful critiques as we progressed and I really enjoyed watching the show and tell presentations of everyone’s work. I’d highly recommend this class.

Fantastic Teacher

I just so enjoyed this class—you’re very kind, incredibly well-spoken, and humorous, and everything is so educational. I know that I’ll continue to learn and use these techniques wherever I go, and they will be in my bag of tricks. I am really thrilled. Thank you so very much.

Incredibly Helpful

I really appreciate the video demos—I watched them all! I have to do something, then think about it, and then come back to it and practice again. They’ve been incredibly helpful. This is something that I’ve wanted to learn how to do for a while. I have your DVD, and it was so helpful that when I finally had a chance to take a class with you, I jumped at the opportunity even though I was in a time crunch. It’s been really wonderful—thank you. much.

I have gotten so much out of this

I feel so much more equipped and empowered to go ahead and play with this myself. Thank you so much for your class. I have gotten so much out of this—I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, and had taken another repoussé (in-person) that was really very unsatisfying. It’s amazing to me that this online class made me more empowered than the one that I took in-person. I found your approach very freeing, and it just feels great, so thank you.

Just a Few of the Included Demos

Whether large or small, high or low relief, traditional or contemporary styles, the technique of Eastern repoussé and chasing lets you do more.

This is the type of repousse used by the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Scythian metalsmiths to achieve works of unsurpassed beauty, and the technique Victoria has employed for everything from stunning jewelry to huge sliding doors on a bespoke super yacht.

By creating multiple projects on a jewelry scale, you will gain a deep knowledge of the process that can be used on any scale whether wearable, functional, or sculptural.

Repoussé is a French word, meaning to “push out.” In metalsmithing, the term repoussé means to strike sheet metal free-hand from the back with punches to create bas relief, while the term chasing means to strike from the front to countersink, refine repoussé or create incised decoration. Eastern repoussé is a specific technical process of repoussé not merely a design style. – Sharp peaks and valleys are my own stylization within the technique, not what makes it Eastern.

  • The delineation of an area to be “puffed” out and repeated going over of the exterior lines.
  • The process of working alternately from the front and back usually within a matrix of sheet metal.
  • The highly polished tools must always strike the metal perpendicular to the surface no matter how the curvature of the metal changes. The tools must be held just above the necks. The lower you hold the tool, the more control you have over where it hits your work!
  • The ability to create multiple levels of relief at any desired height within the laws of physics and met- allurgy.
  • Eastern repoussé is almost always done on 24 gauge non-ferrous sheet. When the background on a larger work must be thicker, 22 gauge will work. Typically Eastern repoussé is done on sterling, copper, or 18k gold. Fine silver in any gauge lacks the resistance needed to maintain details while working.
  • Plasticine, pitch, and bench blocks are all used to support the metal at different points in the process. Using plasticine (non-hardening modeling clay) when hammering from the back allows the metal to expand into much higher relief. – In antiquity smiths used clay for this step. – Supporting the metal with pitch gives more resistance when refining relief from the front. This allows for greater detail and also keeps the relief from caving back in on itself while still allowing some countersinking if desired.

I’ve successfully taught this technique to thousands of students, who go on to create beautiful works of their own designs and in their own creative voices. Many of these students came to me after becoming frustrated that they’d taken chasing and repoussé from other instructors and never done anything but the required class project that everyone had to do. Some were in tears, and some were just sad that their old class projects was still stuck in the pitch bowl half finished.

The process I teach and the exceptionally supportive way I teach (yes, even online!) is unique in the world of chasing and repoussé. It’s not about my ego; it’s about your learning new skills that you might not have even known were possible.
