Granulation Techniques Demystified Online Class with Victoria from Rio Grande and Craftsy.com

Craftsy was recently bought by TN Marketing and is in the process of relaunching their platform. This class is due for re-release on or around September 1, 2020. Please check their site again at that time. I apologize for any inconvenience this delay may cause. It’s completely out of my hands. The good news is that Craftsy/Blueprint got bought from NBC Universal instead of getting the proverbial axe.

~Victoria

Victoria guides you through the process of creating gorgeous, granulated jewelry. 1. Making Granules: Let renowned metalsmith Victoria Lansford demystify the ancient art of granulation! First, learn how to cut sheet metal and wire to create organic or uniform granules. Then, Victoria shows you how to ball your snippets into granules and easily sort and store them by size for different projects.
  2. Fusing Wire: Put your torch to use as you learn about the fundamentals of fusing wire or granules to sheet metal! Discover which visual cues will let you know your project is fully fused and learn how to achieve the proper type of flame with your torch. Plus, create the frame for a granulated charm!
  3. Fusing Granules: Finish your charm by fusing granules inside the wire frame. Learn what type of flux will keep your granules in place and see what an over-fused piece looks like to avoid melting your projects. Give your piece a professional finish with Victoria’s soldered rim technique!
  4. Larger Designs: Expand your design opportunities and learn techniques for fusing larger pieces with pierced designs and dynamic granulation. In addition, practice working with thicker material while maintaining consistent heat for fusing, and tackle firescale with depletion gilding. Then add a patina!
  5. Gold, Dimension & Mirrored Pairs: Learn sophisticated techniques for further design possibilities! First, learn how to work with 18K gold granules to enhance the value of your pieces. Then, learn how to fuse in layers with a dimensional granule pyramid. Bonus: Learn the secret to symmetrical granulated designs in earrings.
  6. Granulation Ring: Granulated rings are traditionally time-consuming and tricky to make but with Victoria’s technique you can fuse perfect detail before your ring shank is even in the round! Start by creating a perfectly sized ring blank and learn why fusing a wire frame to your metal is essential. Then, fuse your granules with ease.
  7. Granulation Ring, Part 2: After cutting out your design, you’ll learn how Victoria forms granulation work into a round ring shank. Learn how to solder, shape and size your band. Next, see how to add a bezel cup and decorative larger granules before finally setting your stone!

What Others Have to Say:

The Michael Bublé of Teachers

Victoria, you are the Michael Bublé of teachers. If you’ve never seen him perform, it’s a real treat because he is so connected to his audience. When he’s on stage it’s all about the audience, not about him. His ego is nowhere to be found, and you teach the same way. You love what you do, and it comes through in your teaching. Thank you for that!

I watched your video and had to express my appreciation for all of the information you provided. I have watched every video available on the web and this was by far the best. But I have come to expect nothing less from your workshops. I also have the filigree workshop, which also is extremely informative, and easy to follow!

Amazing Course! You will love it!
Victoria is one of the finest teachers you will ever have. She is relaxed, articulate, and clear. She answers all your questions and explains everything very well. You can see what she does, and though granulation is not easy and may take a couple of tries to get right, it is worth every bit of effort. It is a satisfying, age-old technique with a look that cannot be gotten any other way, so go for it. You will be happy you did!

Just what I was looking for.
I was thinking what a great idea it would be if there was a class on granulation when this class became available by email. I had been searching the internet for some in depth information on this technique. Even more surprising was that it was a class with one of my very favorite jewelry artists, Victoria Lansford. This class has definitely demystified granulation technique for me. I was surprised to learn about nature’s flux! Also, Victoria is so easy to follow, gives great instructions, itemized materials list, etc.. I have been an admirer of Victoria’s work and it was a delight to find an affordable class online. I would really love it if she would add to this list of classes.

Expect a lot of ‘ah-HA!!’ moments will be had

Fantastic class for beginners and experts alike!
I really enjoyed this class, and I think you will, too. I am a strong beginner/ new intermediate metalworker, and so a lot of the introduction to certain tools and the torch were known to me. Even so, the instructor breaks down what you need to know in an easy format to follow, and doesn’t use jargon or terms you won’t recognize. I enjoyed the refresher! Her method of fusing is MUCH easier than the original way I learned, and I am very pleased with the results I’m getting. You wont be disappointed with this class, and like me, I expect a lot of ‘ah-HA!!’ moments will be had! Enjoy!

Excellent course!
I highly recommend this course. Victoria is not only a talented artist but also a skillful instructor who paces the class just right. She spends plenty of time on fusing, which can be pretty intimidating to the new metalsmith! The day after I watched this course I went to the studio and transformed some silver scrap into a pretty cool ring, if I do say so myself. I look forward to more classes from this promising Rio/Craftsy collaboration!

“In Japan, Victoria would be considered a national treasure…”

Victoria teaches techniques used for millennia to create many of the great works of art one can see in museums. Though these techniques had fallen into disuse due to their labor intensive nature, Victoria has found many tricks that streamline and improve the processes, and she uses them to make strikingly contemporary pieces rooted in the ancient world.

One will never go into a hardware store with the same mind set again. Students are given a series of challenges and opportunities to grow their own inner voices and are encouraged to create works unique to them, at their levels of ability.

The number of places one can learn these skills in the US can be counted conveniently on one's thumbs. In Japan, Victoria would be considered a national treasure, and she would be funded to pass these skills on to the next generation.
