Foliage is a recent series of Eastern repousse mokume gane. Instead of flattening out all the slopes of the mountains, as has been my style for quite a few years now, I let the shapes retain more of their curvature on both axies. This gives the shapes a feeling of building vertically on top of each other. The shapes themselves are inspired by fern fronds, aspidistras, and orchid leaves. My intent is to create an abstracted hanging garden effect, reminiscent of indoor botanical conservatories with their walls of lush texture.
These pieces begin life as flat unpatterend sheets of fused layers of metals. All of the mokume patterning is a direct result of the Eastern repousse process. Once I've completed the repousse, I grind off the hammer marks on the surface to reveal the cross section of all those lucious layers of metal. Patination highlights the contrasting colors of the shibuichi, copper, and sterling.

Masters: All Chained Up
gane is a laminate technique composed of fused sheets of varying
alloys, such as sterling, gold, copper,
shibuichi, or shakudo, that are hammered, carved, and/or
filed to expose a cross section, creating unique patterns.
This technique is similar to damascene steel.
